"Wacht auf, wacht auf, ihr Kinderlein,

Es wird nun wohl bald Frühling sein!"

--Da reckt und streckt die kleine Schar

Und fährt sich durch das wirre Haar.

Nun kommt ein jedes Wurzelkind

und bringt sein Kleidchen ganz geschwind,

Hinein zur guten Mutter Erde,

Damit´s von ihr gemustert werde.

Now finished is each tiny dress,

Which is the prettiest, can you guess?

It's up to mother earth to tell,

Which rootchild did her sewing well.

Book (1906) by Sibylle v. Olfers; Translated from German by Inga von Boetticher with permission given to me by her daughter Uschi Schnell.

This Wurzelkind is sewn from reclaimed mostly cotton velour fabric, ~ 4 1/2” filled with organic flaxseeds and organic lavender flowers, stands on her little cloth covered wooden feet, pipe cleaners for poseable arms, knitted mohair caps for hair .

In the bottom picture you can see them with Mother Earth waking them up, then getting their new fabrics for summer clothing. After that they all are sitting in their sewing circle eager to get their work done as nicely and quickly as they can, as spring and then summer is not too far off.....
